Luigi Mangione, 26, who on Monday was detained as a person of interest in the shooting death of UnitedHealthcare Group Inc. CEO Brian Thompson, graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with bachelor’s and master’s degrees in computer science in 2020.

According to a LinkedIn account attributed to him, Mangione started work as a data engineer upon graduation.

Mangione was arrested at a McDonald’s in Altoona, Pa., on gun charges unrelated to Thompson’s shooting murder last week, according to authorities. He was on a Greyhound bus traveling through Altoona and briefly left the bus to eat.

Born and raised in Maryland, Mangione was valedictorian of his prep school in Maryland, where he graduated in 2016.

A LinkedIn account attributed to Mangione says he was head counselor at a Stanford University pre-collegiate studies program in 2019.

Mangione co-founded the University of Pennsylvania Game Research and Development Environment during his freshman year, according to a blog post on Penn Engineering Today.

Along with weapons, a fake ID and a disguise, Mangione also had a three-page handwritten document that “does seem that he had some ill will toward corporate America,” police said.

A Goodreads profile that belongs to Mangione showed he reviewed Kaczynski’s notorious “Industrial Society and Its Future” manifesto in January.

Mangione’s last known address was in Honolulu, Hawaii.
